Popular Styles of Bathroom Design

In the last hundred years, the bathroom has come a long way. Bathing, formerly limited to a simple tub placed in front of the living room fire and filled with buckets of water, is today considered a luxury in almost every Western household. Only the rich and privileged could afford to have a “bathroom” in their home back then. This tendency resulted in the mass manufacturing of bathroom items.

The Edwardian and Victorian styles were fashionable at the time, and they remain so now. They are stunning in a villa or cottage bathroom and never go out of style.

The bathroom may have progressed as far as it can today, owing to improved plumbing and contemporary technology. It’s tough to conceive how bathrooms could get much more sophisticated with luxurious steam rooms and hydrotherapy pools. However, design trends in the bathroom, like in every other home area, are constantly changing.

The five most common bathroom design styles are discussed in this article. Traditional, country, shabby chic, modern, and fantasy are some of the styles available.

Traditional Bathroom Design

The phrase “traditional bathroom” may refer to either an Edwardian or Victorian-style bathroom or a conventional white bathroom with essential sanitary equipment and a bath. Here, we’ll look at the origins of the bathroom design style.

You could find a rare item in a scrap yard or a dump, such as an ancient slipper bath or corroded classic faucet. Still, manufacturers are fortunately keeping up with demand with beautifully made traditional bathroom items.

Certain rooms are only functional in certain homes; thus, the conventional bathroom will not work for you if you live in a contemporary high-rise apartment. If you have an ancient cottage or villa hideaway, you should certainly consider this type of bathroom.

Almost often, the bath is the focal point of the traditional bathroom. A free-standing roll-top or slipper bath stands boldly on a dark polished floor, while an inset or recessed tub is only appropriate in a classic continental design bathroom. A wall-mounted or free-standing faucet looks elegant. Traditional sanitary ware is defined by deep ridges and curved angles, which make it solid and manly.

Soft tones and bright colours may also work well when designing a classic bathroom. Strong browns, maroons, and greens provide an incredible warmth to space but make sure the bathroom is adequately lighted, maybe with a magnificent chandelier. Antique gold may appear better than chrome in the appropriate colours. Always choose curtains over blinds. If you prefer a vanity unit over a conventional basin and pedestal, opt with an oak or cherry finish; the white Sink vanity unit goes well with traditional bathtubs and toilets.

One of the most attractive aspects of the traditional bathroom is that clutter gives it a more lived-in appearance, complementing the classic style. Don’t be scared to hang a lot of photos on the walls – black and white family photographs in gold frames look great. A chest of drawers or corner tables adorned with fragrant candles, aromatherapy oils, or flowers will bring the space to life. An old-fashioned set of weighing scales, a big framed mirror, or a massive vintage radiator will provide a warm, retro atmosphere to the area.

Country Bathroom Design

The country-style bathroom is probably the simplest to design, and like the traditional bathroom, it works best in the right home. Floral wallpaper, basin frills, high beams, and a bath canopy are all linked with the traditional country style. Cast iron bathtubs and deep ridged sanitary ware, which adhere to the classic style, give the rustic bathroom its nostalgic appearance.

Check, flowery, or checkered curtains are favoured over roller blinds, and shutters, while uncommon in England, provide excellent seclusion while also contributing to the rural feel. Wood is prominent in this design, and nearly all furniture works well in this environment, particularly vanity units and cabinets made of beech, maple, ash, or oak.

Tiles or wood flooring may also be utilized. Tiles should have a rustic colour and be able to be used to make intricate mosaics. Floors made of wood should be varnished to match the furnishings. A stencilled pattern may be utilized as a border in decorating, and the method of rubbing paint on the walls with a sponge gives the space a worn natural appearance.

High-level cisterns and draw chains in toilets are becoming less popular, yet they are essential for the rustic bathroom, as are traditional bath and basin taps. Almost any kind of free-standing bath will work in the rustic bathroom. If you want to take a shower, a tiled walk-in shower with a curtain to hide the space is the best choice.

Shabby Chic Bathroom Design

“Shabby chic,” a relatively new term for interior designs, is an enigmatic mix of neglect and elegance. It is one of the most challenging bathroom designs to construct, and choosing this bathroom style requires a bold choice. It is almost definitely at its best in a European home, such as a French chateau or an ancient Spanish villa.

The shabby chic aesthetic is a mishmash of styles and items that is the polar opposite of a fitted bathroom. Nothing is required to match, and pipes and plumbing are shown rather than hidden. You may even do something out of the ordinary, such as putting a refrigerator in a corner. This design is best suited to people who have inherited a bathroom and wish to modernize it rather than purchasing a whole new bathroom suite.

Cast iron bathtubs, like those seen in rural and traditional bathrooms, are a necessity. A roll-top or slipper bath would suffice, and although you don’t want holes or corrosion, the frailer it seems, the better. Consider sanding the paintwork and claw feet with sandpaper. Keeping an eye out for vintage fixtures at antique stores and car boot sales is typically a good idea.

In this environment, countertop basins are very suggested and search for really unique ornamented patterns. Put it on a washstand or an old vanity unit. Decorate with one-of-a-kind decorations and antique framed mirrors.

Modern Bathroom Design

What you do with the space you have in a modern bathroom is everything. Many bathrooms have a little area to work with, so making the most available space is critical. This is why fitted bathroom suites are becoming more popular. When renovating a bathroom, having bathroom furniture built to measure is one of the most practical design options.

How many of us have experienced a bathroom with a disorganized airing cupboard? There’s no need to jam your toiletries, towels, and cleaning supplies around the boiler in the contemporary bathroom. You’ll have enough room with fitted vanity units, storage units, and cupboards.

Wall-hung furniture must be mentioned while discussing contemporary bathroom design. White gloss is a classic that will never go out of style, but furniture finishes such as wenge, beech, and maple have lately seen a surge in popularity.

In addition to the furnishings, wall-hung sanitary equipment saves space while providing the bathroom with a modern vibe. Furthermore, hidden cistern units have a more appealing appearance than conventional close-coupled toilets.

Shower baths are an excellent practical method to maximize space while providing the comfort of both bathing and showering. Walk-in showers are also trendy in the contemporary bathroom. When purchasing a shower enclosure for the modern bathroom, select one with a chrome framework over one with a white construction.

Instead of classic style faucets, chrome and stainless steel are the ultimate choices in the modern bathroom. Taps and bath mixers come in a variety of contemporary styles. Also, instead of conventional white radiators, select chrome towel rails and corresponding chrome accessories.

When tiling or painting, don’t be afraid to use bright colours to create a striking contrast with the chrome and shine. If you’re going to use curtains, keep the patterns and colours modest, and go for elegant roller blinds instead.

Fantasy Bathroom Design

The dream bathroom design allows you to be creative with your desires and preferences by daring to be anything other than conventional. This bathroom design is the polar opposite of the traditional, with a focus on the futuristic.

The fantasy design is best limited to oversized bathrooms since wide-open areas pull the room together in any future interior design. Showering and bathing are best done in steam cabins and whirlpool tubs. Alternatively, you may combine the two with a well-designed bath screen and a glass shower panel. Walk-in showers complement contemporary tiling, chrome shower fittings, and elegant shower lighting due to their little impact.

Choose a wall-hung or conventional close-coupled toilet and basin with a pedestal with sharp angles and a modern style for sanitary ware. Abstract towel rails and wenge wall-hung furnishings complement the dream bathroom’s serene, almost surreal appearance.

A waterproof TV would be the ultimate luxury in a dream bathroom. You might even consider converting the bathroom into a gym, replete with an exercise bike and a rowing machine.

Ornaments should be subtle, so go for tiny heaps of pebbles and contemporary wall posters over candles and trinkets.
